    Living in France: documents

    Residence permit

EU Nationals do not need a residence permit in France, but people from other countries should check with the French embassy in their own country for more information.

    Social Security

If you are employed in France, your employer should take care of all the Social Security paperwork for you. If you are retired then you can transfer your UK NI payments to the French system - see our section on retiring in France for advice on this. If you are self-employed however, you will have to register yourself as well as register with the tax office. We would advise that you to get professional advice on this, or, if you have a lot of time to spare and are very brave, then we advise that you buy a book on the subject at the very least!
