Travel in France
France is the most popular destination for Britons travelling abroad. Why? Well, the low duty on tobacco and alcohol,
and the world famous wines may have something to do with it, but anyone who travels to France just for the booze is missing out.
It doesn't have to be a camping holiday either (though France is perfect for camping): why not go skiing in the Alps, take a tour of
the ancient cities, or just relax by the beach and take the opportunity to show off your French.
Despite the size of the country, getting about in France is made relatively easy (apart from when lorry drivers
or farmers decide to blockade the roads) with an extensive and fairly efficient transport
infrastructure. The road network is for instance the longest in Europe and the SNCF
(French state owned railway company) one of the better run and overall more reliable than the
British rail companies, with of course the famous TGV or high speed trains which link Paris to
Marseille for example (around 500 miles) in just over 3 hours (well under half the time of a car
journey by toll motorway).
For more information on trains in France, and for online booking facilities, visit the
SNCF website.
